no.16...

Hi!

Have just looked at wikis- an online community encyclopedia. It is a useful way for libraries to collaborate, share knowledge. I spent a short amount of time looking at various wiki entries from different public libraries and was especially interested in the book lovers wiki from Princeton Public Library. I feel that this would be a fun way for patrons to offer reviews of their favourite books, but how this could be done in the library setting I'm not sure. I have not been able to locate the sandbox wiki; I hope that posting this in my blog would suffice!

Up to thing no.13...

Hi!

Yes, been a while! I have looked at tagging, which is a method of categorising online content (webpages, pictures and posts.) I have played around with various newspaper articles through technorati- basically this deals with clicking on 'tags' to go into an article in more detail. In the same section I played around with various blogs related to political articles. You can choose a 'tag' to view blogs that interest you. As for no.15, I had read through some of the views expressed to do with web 2.0 and the future of libraries. Frankly, I found very little of great interest and alot of it was full of jargon and opinions that were difficult to grasp. Still, I do feel that the greater public, except perhaps for those in the teen to twenty age bracket, would have little or no knowledge of 2.0. Should training for the public be offered? How, in the long run, would this benefit the broader population?

There was one suggestion I did find interesting, and that was the possibility of one library service being able to access another's in order to check whether a particular item is checked out.

I will get back to you with regrds no.13!!

Hi Janelle!

About time no doubt! I have spent some time looking at week 4; actually really beginning to get the hang of it. I think I am understanding RSS- Really Simple Syndication. It's a file format for delivering regularly updated information over the web. I have actually set up a blog for myself, but as yet have not posted anything but have looked at various posts from various library organisations, among them one which discusses whether or not public libraries mislead users. There was the example of a library in the US with a drinking fountain which actually has a warning sign posted above it 'do not drink or eat in the library'. Just one choice gem.

I have also gone through week 5, which is my favourite so far. As a book enthusiast, I obviuosly spent some time looking at LibraryThing and in the short time I had I posted a few book titles and was interested to see how many other posts there were for these. LibraryThing is basically a catalogue of books you have read and provides the opportunity to share these with others. I havent gone into great detail with rollyo, and will look at that further. 'Til next posting,

bye for now!

week 4

Have explored rss and news feeds, including various library-related blogs. Have posted my own short blog relating to our library, but have kept this private.

Technology

In reply to week 3 task, I would have to say that the one thing technology related that is of interest to me would be anything to do with up-loading and sharing photos with others through flickr. Fascinating! I have relatives overseas who would no doubt appreciate the ability to upload family photos anytime.
